How to Drill Wood Successfully
There are various ways to drill wood for different projects, such as installing shelves, constructing fences, and fixing curtain rods. Here are multiple ways to prepare wood successfully:
Use clamps to make the workpiece steady and balanced.
Select the right drill bits for the type of project you want to make.
Ensure that the drill bit is sharp. This will make your job easy and safe.
Make an indent or hole at the center point where you are going to drill the hole.
Begin drilling on the material gradually by placing the drill bit on the center point indentation. This will prevent the drill from moving out of the focal point.
Tape an X on the center or spot where you want to drill a pilot hole.
Increase your drilling speed gradually from slow to medium on metals and drill faster on woods.
Do not put too much pressure to prevent the equipment from groaning.
Remove chips or flakes of wood from the flute of the drill bit by pulling it out and blowing it off.
If you are drilling a hardwood, always use the stop-and-cool method. Simply place a bowl of cold water close to you where you can immerse the tool for some seconds to lessen the heat. Drills get dull when they are hot.
Check the drilling progress of your bit. This can help you in detecting jams or lugs and removing the debris from the tool.
Reduce your drilling speed when the drill bit gets to the other end of the material. This will prevent it from creating a ragged end on the other side.
Drill holes on your workpiece one step at a time. This will ensure that the tip of your bit exits from the material neatly.
Experienced woodworkers always have two sets of drill bits.
